Gerald P. Corcoran, M.D.
Family Practitioner
Gerald P. Corcoran, was born and raised in Massachusetts and earned a Bachelor of Science from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA. He further earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington.
He served in the United States Navy as an Intern at Saint Albans Naval Hospital in Queens New York, and as a Resident at Jacksonville Naval Air Station Hospital in Florida providing him with the skills needed to care for patients in any area of the world. Orders were cut, and he and his family traveled to Canada and supported the medical needs of a United States Naval Base in Placentia Bay, Argentia, Newfoundland, site of the signing of the North Atlantic Charter by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, August 14th, 1941. For two years, he provided all of the Medical Services for the dependents of the Naval Personnel. Additionally, he provided Obstetric and Gynecologic services as well as Surgical Services for adult men and women, as well as children. He was promoted and named Commanding Officer of Naval Base Hospital. Expansion and changes in the Strategic Mission of the Naval Base called for a relocation and reorganization of the hospital. Under his direction this was accomplished with efficiency and safety so that the health of no patient was impacted adversely at any moment during the transfer. He received a commendation from the Surgeon General of the United States Navy for his work at Naval Air Base Argentia, Newfoundland. Additionally, after later serving a Chief of Outpatient Medicine at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Kittery, Maine, his recommendations for Medical Care were instituted across the entire Medical Corps of the United States Navy. _________________________________ Dr. Corcoran came to Needham acquiring the practice of Allen Morrissey, M.D. who had started practicing in Needham in 1958. Over the years Dr. Corcoran expanded Needham Family Practice opening new offices elsewhere in Needham and Dedham. Needham Family Practice Associates and Dr. Corcoran are still taking care of Dr. Morrissey's patients and are proud to have maintained this continuous medical care since 1958. Currently in Center of Downtown Needham, at 1410 Highland Ave, he is now concentrating on continuing the Tradition of Care, which for years, Needham Family Practice Associates has been known. Here, free from the business and organizational influences of Hospitals and Networks, care can be delivered with the central mission being the sole, best interest of the patient. When he is not in the office caring for his patients, Dr. Corcoran for many years has studied and lectured on Medical Ethics, enabling the patients, of doctors in attendance, to be treated with regard for the inherent dignity of the human person. He has lectured to the Guild of St. Luke in Boston, serving as President for many years, the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia and across the United States for National Non-Profit Medical Organizations. He has also served as Associate Professor and Clinical Instructor of Medicine at The University of Massachusetts Medical School and Clinical Instructor at Tufts University School of Medicine and also as Clinical Instructor at the Harvard Medical School. In 2006, serving as Conference Chair, he presented a National Conference in Boston on Medical Ethics on the Natural Moral Law for over four hundred physicians from across the United States and the world. Dr. Corcoran is a guest lecturer in Health Care Policy at his Alma Mater, Boston College, at the Carroll School of Management. Dr. Corcoran has served on numerous Board of Directors of Hospital and Health Care Organizations in Massachusetts. He served as President of the Medical Staff at Glover Memorial Hospital in Needham and as Chairman of the Capital Campaign in 1997 ensuring the survival, of at the time, a Truly Local Community Hospital such as “The Glover”. His passion for Family Practice, treating patients’ diseases of the body, mind and spirit over many years, has created a medical facility where patients can feel at home. Where patients can feel assured that the focus of care will be on them and any exceptional medical needs. Dr. Corcoran and Needham Family Practice are proud to enjoy relationships with patients, including those Dr. Corcoran delivered and now, also their children, as well as their families which have lasted decades and welcome new patients who can also benefit from the assurance of continuity, and the unique “excellence of care, with the personal touch” of Needham Family Practice. |
